Artist in Residence at
Rockland Woods Residency 2022
At Rockland I explored concepts of sensuality, eroticism, and beauty. Building off the momentum gained from my last residency in Portland, I created a series of work that embodies the new found confidence in my practice.
I studied Shunga and Ukiyo-e woodblock prints, specifically work by Katsushika Hokusai. I was drawn to the shamlessness in Shunga, the delicate beauty of pleasure districts in the Ukiyo-e, and specifically Hokusai's Tako to Ama print.
The work acts as a contradiction to voices that say only certain types of bodies can be sexual, a contradiction to my body dysmorphia, and a contradiction to the shame/embarrassment around being a sensual-seeking-being!
